Piazza Looking toward Building "B"

Located in the Santa Croce neighborhood of Florence, Piazza dei Ciompi was once home to a vibrant flea market. In the late-2000s, the flea market was relocated, and the Piazza fell into disrepair. We were asked to develop an urban and architectural intervention that would breathe life back into the Piazza while providing new resources for the community and visitors alike. An existing historical building – the Loggia de Pesce – would remain on site. Adjacent site alignments (sidewalks, the Loggia, views, etc.) defined the initial boundaries of the design. The program was split between two buildings for the dual benefits of framing outdoor space and providing logical organization. Building A serves as a one-story events space. Building B holds the more community focused programming. The aesthetics of the design looked to pull materials from the projects context while reinterpreting them onto simple, functional forms.
