The design for this deck in North Jackson looked to compliment the needs of the client while elevating the existing beauty of an elegant Victorian century home and 12 acre property that surrounded it. The clients found the ideas of stepping and layering as a way to define spaces especially interesting as a design strategy. In response, the two-tiered deck shown was developed. The upper level provides a landing and step down from the rear of the house with a grilling area provided on the west side. The lower level is a dining space framed by large planters. Between the deck and the mudroom is a small garden space that connects the area to the driveway and yard beyond.
Two aesthetic concepts were developed. The first, Victorian, looked to complement the existing design of the house by playing off elements such as the roof frieze and existing color scheme. The second, Contemporary, looked to create an intentional division between old and new in an effort to highlight the best aspects of both.
